History of Aromatherapy Oils and Treatments

Did you know that aromatherapy is a relatively new term when compared to how long the actual practice of using aromatherapy oils has been around? It is true. The word “aromatherapy” was not coined until the 1920’s. It has long been thought that aromatherapy essential oils could be used to heal the body and spirit. Ancient cultures across the globe have all used massage techniques and aromatic flowers or herbs to help people. Tinctures and teas made from certain plants and herbs were considered invaluable medicines in their time. It is funny how the word came about from sheer coincidence.

During the 1920’s, a French chemist by the name of Rene Maurice Gattefosse was researching essential oils. He was trying to discover the properties of these oils and their use in healing. Quite by accident, Gattefosse burned his arm by catching it aflame. He quickly submerged his hand in a nearby vat of liquid, which just so happened to be lavender oil. What did he discover? He discovered that the burn was soothed quickly and later realized that the healing time of the burn had been dramatically decreased. He began labeling this essential oil with the term “aromatherapy” due to its therapeutic qualities. As well, he wrote several aromatherapy books.

Aromatherapy oils have always been used for medicinal purposes. Aromatherapy may be a modern word but the uses of essential oils have been around since man first learned to choose certain plants over another. Jasmine, lavender and vanilla have been used for quite some time for their mind and body healing powers. Gattefosse just helped to reinforce the healing properties of certain essential oils.

If you are going to use aromatherapy oils in your life, then you need to know that there are a few ways to use the oils. Aerial diffusion, direct inhalation, body applications and oral applications are the ways you can use an essential oil to help boost your mood, health and spirit. If one particular method does not seem to work as well for you, then you can always try a different combination of delivery methods to give you the results you wish.

Making Your Own Aromatherapy Products

Why are you still paying so much money for those aromatherapy products you see in the stores? Everywhere you go there is another new scented candle, some body lotions and even soaps that all claim to be an aromatherapy product. But how much of that advertising is just hype? People are moving away from pharmaceutical companies and moving towards holistic medicines. However, sometimes the products marketed as aromatherapy are really nothing more than hype. The best bet is to make it yourself and then you know what is inside the bottle.

Most bath salts, lotions and candles all start off with a base, plus aromatherapy essential oils. It is the oils, of course, that give the product its scent. Different scents will illicit a different response from your body. Some people find lavender to be very effective in calming their mood and producing a feeling of tranquility. Peppermint oil is used to boost energy levels and give the body a wake-up call. Knowing which scent does what is essential information to have and will determine how you make your body lotions, pillar candles and body massage oils.

Aromatherapy products, besides the essential oil, have a base in which they are mixed. Soap would have a glycerin base whereas a lotion would have neutral scented base so that you could add whatever scents appeal to you, and bath salts have a neutral smelling special salt that dissolves in water better. There are two things to watch out for when making your own aromatic products. The first is that you never use the wrong kind of essential oil for your skin. There are some types of oils that can irritate skin so you cannot use fragrant oil meant for an oil burner on your skin. It may be too overpowering.

Remember that not all bases are alike. The base for body lotions is definitely not the same one used for shampoos or hand soaps. You have to be careful of what you mix so that your intended result is right on track. To save yourself some time and effort you may want to consider purchasing a kit or a book to help you understand the basics of aromatherapy products and how to make these products from the comfort of your own home.
